Songs & Hymns

Below are a few songs and hymns written specially to encourage us to engage with our impact on creation.  Also consider writing new songs and hymns!

What the Lord Creates’ is a song written by young people  (tune : 7.7.8.8.7.7.  Twinkle twinkle little star)
Praise him, Praise him, Praise the Lord
For the wonders of the world.

For the people big and small
For the animals short and tall
We will care for all these things
That our Lord Creator brings.

Praise him, Praise him, Praise the Lord
For the wonders of the world.

For the sea and for the sky
For the animals and birds that fly
We will care for all these things
That our Lord Creator brings.

Praise him, Praise him, Praise the Lord
For the wonders of the world.

For the seasons of the year
For the plants that re-appear
We will care for all these things
That our Lord Creator brings.

Praise him, Praise him, Praise the Lord
For the wonders of the world.

For the Beauty of the Earth (tune: As the Deer Pants. Songs of Hymns of Fellowship 22 - Listen to the tune)

For the beauty of the earth
We give to God our praise.
He has giv'n us his whole creation
Now and for always.
We have flowers and exotic food
From Countries far away
We have fuel and technology
To help us day by day.

But the earth belongs to our children,
It's not ours to destroy.
They will need its scarce resources,
To use and to enjoy.
And do we take the daily bread
From the children of the poor?
Do we poison the very world
Which could give them so much more?

For the beauty of the earth
We give to God our praise.
He has lent us his whole creation
Cherish it always.
We can learn to be fair in trade
And pay what goods are worth.
Show we care for the next generation,
Live more lightly on the earth.

'Songs for Celebrating Creation' This is a compilation of over 20 songs written by Norman Habel.

There are nine hymns on the CEL website that you may like to use, to be sung to well known tunes. New ones are being added.  The authors are happy for people to print their hymn for services and non commercial publications etc provided that the exact words are printed, and that the authors are credited. They would be pleased to hear where the hymns are being used.

These will appear in the book "Environment Praise"

Hymns of Creation:   There is a wide selection of generally well known hymns :
All creatures of our God and King
Fairest Lord Jesus
Earth and stars
For the beauty of the earth
Great is thy faithfulness
He’s everything to me
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty
How great thou art
I am his and he is mine
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
Morning has broken
My  God is there
O day of rest and gladness
Pass it on
Praise be to Jesus
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Teach us what we yet may be
This is my Father’s world
We plough the fields and scatter
We sing the greatness of our Lord

Many hymn books have a selection of hymns with a creation theme, notably:
Big Blue Planet and other songs for worship in God’s world - by Judy Jarvis, Publ. Stainer and Bell  - click here for more information.
Christian Ecology Link
The Iona Community (Wild Goose Publications) publish a range of hymn books, many of which have hymns and songs with a creation theme.
